Portland Activists Gather Food for Neighbors in Need

Two volunteers for Friends of Seasonal and Service Workers (FSSW) canvassing for the annual food drive in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of SE Portland.

One of Portland’s most consistent qualities is that when times get stuff, we come together.

That's just the sort of people this city attracts. This place means the world to us. In our hearts, it’s a symbol for what caring community looks and feels like. What it can accomplish together.

So it’s no surprise that the Friends of Seasonal and Service Workers (FSSW) was founded here in 1982 as an unincorporated membership association of activists all seeking collective solutions to the poverty conditions experienced by seasonal, farm and service workers.

One of their biggest initiatives is an annual food drive, and Human Centric Media was glad to ride along as FSSW’s charming volunteers canvassed door-to-door in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of SE Portland.

Residents greeted them kindly, signing up to gather cans and other nonperishable foods to be collected the following week. These donations make sure that workers’ families don’t go hungry during layoffs, slow seasons or periods of economic hardship.

Human Centric Media wants more of our neighbors to be fed and housed, an economy that allows working class people to pursue their dreams, plus governments that are abolitionist to their core and focused on providing for people rather than punishing them.

This vision is baked into every aspect of our business – the way we depict people, tell stories and build relationships. Values are at the core of all of our decision making.

This shared conviction is what makes Portland so strong, and worth defending.
