
In aging, there is a dichotomy of wisdom: experience is the best teacher but the freedom and imagination of youth contains its own special clarity.
During a formative time in my life, I found comfort in the teachings of the Buddhist philosophy Dōgen. He taught that, "Dropping off body and mind is recovering your natural state, the state that is your birthright and that you have somehow forgotten."
What makes me so optimistic about the future is the fundamental goodness I see in our young people. The world has gotten smaller, cultures more interconnected, and the young leaders I meet inhabit a profound openness.
Sarah wanted to celebrate her love of reading with these senior portraits at Powell's Books, but part of what we ended up with is a shining slice of her life — graduation and a trip overseas in her future .. and beyond that, possibility!
For any profound leader to be effective, they have to tap into the imagination of their young mind. It's still in there, yearning to be free!
