As Portland Evolves, Civic Leaders Join a Downtown Demolition

A candid photograph of elected officials and attendees socializing before the demolition event, with the Portland skyline in the background. This showcases corporate event photography.

The world is changing and Portland, as a world-class city, is changing along with it.

Part of its evolution was the demolition of the old downtown post office, an icon along Broadway for many decades, now left obsolete by innovations in mail delivery efficiency, and the introduction of email.

Who isn’t charmed by receiving a letter? There will always be a place, in our book, for snail mail.

Elected officials were on-hand to press the big button and commence deconstruction – Mayor Ted Wheeler spoke about the potential in the city’s future, Representative Suzanne Bonamici heaped praise on Portland as a beacon for progress and innovation, and members of the city council attended, as well.

Prosper Portland approached Human Centric Media to make sure the occasion was thoughtfully documented, and as everyone gathered around bagels and coffee, we felt struck by the momentum of constant change: a city’s imperative to always move forward and grow with its population.

For a time, it felt like we were becoming more thoughtful about who this process left behind. In these days of vengeful austerity, powerful forces would like us to stop worrying about that, and recommit to innovation by any means.

I feel cautious. There’s something so precious going on in Portland. It draws creative people from all around as a safe haven for their ideas and rebellious self-expression. That’s worth protecting.

Elected officials come and go, as do public buildings, but our values are more long-lasting. They’ve baked into the soil, the air we breathe, and the impact we have on each other.

That’s the sort of legacy Human Centric Media is most concerned about: what messages we’re sending young people. The way we consider their needs as we move chess pieces around the board.

We’re all in this together.
